Tap and jazz in Raytown

Learn the shuffle

Shuffle is a tap and jazz school with five teachers and a wooden floor that rings. Children of 6 and up, teens and adults come for the rhythm, in classes that start at the first step and lead, when a dancer wants, to the performance group.

Meet the teachers

Five teachers share the week at Shuffle. Three of them lead the classes on this page.

    Founder and director, tap

Leander founded Shuffle and teaches the Time Steps and Performance Group tap classes. He grew up hearing tap on the boards of a church hall, and he still answers the studio phone on Monday afternoons.

    Tap and Open Floor

Marquita leads the Open Floor classes for teens and adults and a Time Steps class on Thursdays. She likes a beginner who laughs at the first wrong step.

    Jazz and First Steps

Jahaira teaches jazz and the First Steps tap classes for ages 6 to 8. She is the teacher a family meets at the door on Saturday mornings.

What families and dancers say

“Saturday mornings sound like rain on a tin roof, and my daughter walks out humming a rhythm. The teachers meet every dancer at the door.”

Denise W.Parent of an eight-year-old

“I tapped for one year as a kid and thought that was that. The Open Floor class is patient with a beginner, and nobody counts your mistakes.”

Carl M.Adult student

“The watch week showed me what a class is really like. My son can't wait for Wednesday, and I like that the extras are explained before we sign up.”

Tasha R.Parent of a thirteen-year-old

Sample reviews.

Before your first class

Shoes, watching, which class. The rest is on the family policies page.

Do I need tap shoes for the first class?

No. Come in clean sneakers or socks, and the teacher will tell you when shoes are needed, usually in the second or third week. Please wait before you buy a pair.

How do I try a class?

Pick a class from the schedule and book a visit on our registration page. Arrive ten minutes early, and the teacher will meet you at the door.

Which class is right for my child?

Classes are grouped by age and level. Tell the teacher what your dancer has done before, and they will place them at the door. First Steps is where new dancers of 6 to 8 begin.

May I watch?

The sixth week of every session is a watch week, and a window in the hall lets families look in on other days. The family policies page has the details.

What are the extras?

A costume for the May recital, a recital production charge, tickets for guests, and tap and jazz shoes from the family. How tuition works says what each one is for.
