Jazz

Music with a pulse, for ages 9 and up.

Jazz at Shuffle follows the same plan as tap: we count, we listen, we travel. The jazz room has a black floor and a sound system, and every class ends with a combination the group shares before the cool-down.

What a class is like

  1. 01

    Step 1: Warm-up

Rolling through the spine, the shoulders and the hips, to music.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Isolations

Moving one part at a time, slowly, and then together.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Walks and turns

Jazz walks, simple turns and changes of direction across the floor.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The combination

A short routine learned over the month and shared at the end of class.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Cool-down

A last stretch and a few words about next week.

What to wear and bring

  • Shoes

Jazz shoes with a split sole once the teacher says so, and bare feet or socks before that.

  • Clothes

A fitted top with leggings or shorts. Layers for the warm-up are fine.

  • Hair and bag

Hair off the face. Phones stay in the bag during class.

Levels and your teacher

  • Level

    How a dancer moves up

Four levels share the floor, from First Steps to the Performance Group. The teacher and the family decide together, after a session, and there is no test.
